Socratic Writing Mode — AI That Helps You Think Without Writing for You

I would love to see an optional Socratic Writing Mode designed specifically to preserve and strengthen human authorship. In this mode, the AI would not generate or rewrite manuscript prose unless the author explicitly unlocks that ability. Instead, the AI could: - ask thoughtful questions one at a time; - challenge assumptions; - identify gaps or contradictions; - ask for examples, experiences, or clarification; - reflect the author's ideas back without replacing them; - help distinguish observation, interpretation, hypothesis, and conclusion; - suggest possible directions to explore; - summarize material the author has already produced; - ask what the author actually wants to say before suggesting wording. For example, instead of responding to: "Help me write a chapter about why modern health advice often becomes fragmented" with a generated chapter, Socratic Mode might ask: "What do you personally think is being lost when health is divided into separate interventions?" The conversation could continue until the author's own argument becomes sufficiently clear. Only then could the author choose: "Now help me structure what I have said" or "Now suggest a draft based only on my answers." A workspace-level or chat-level toggle would be ideal: Normal AI Mode Socratic Mode Questions Only Mode This could make Scribeist especially valuable for authors who want the benefits of AI without outsourcing the original thinking that makes a book worth writing. Instead of becoming a ghostwriter, AI becomes an intelligent interviewer, editor, and thinking partner.
