Automatic Full Workspace Backup & Portable Project Export
I would love to see an automatic full-workspace backup system, ideally with support for external destinations such as Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or a downloadable local archive.
For a serious book project, the manuscript is only one part of the work. Over time, a Scribeist workspace can also contain research, planning documents, Canvas structures, citations, notes, metadata, AI-assisted work, and other project context.
I would therefore love an option to back up the entire workspace rather than only exporting the finished manuscript.
Ideally, a full backup could include:
- manuscript text and chapter/folder structure;
- planning documents;
- research source metadata;
- research notes;
- citations and reference relationships;
- Canvas files and relationships;
- comments and chapter notes;
- workspace settings;
- relevant project metadata;
- manually saved snapshots or version checkpoints where technically possible.
Useful scheduling options could include:
- manual backup;
- daily;
- weekly;
- monthly.
For example:
Scribeist
→ automatic weekly backup
→ Google Drive
→ “Book Title – Workspace Backup – 2026-10-01.zip”
It would be even better if the archive used portable, documented formats where possible, such as Markdown, JSON, BibTeX/CSL JSON, JSON Canvas, and standard media files, rather than an opaque proprietary backup format.
A restore/import option would obviously be ideal, but even a well-structured portable export would already provide enormous value.
This would give authors much more confidence using Scribeist as the central working environment for manuscripts that may take years to create.
It would also reduce vendor lock-in and make Scribeist more attractive as a professional long-term authoring platform: users can commit deeply to the platform while still knowing that their intellectual work remains portable and safely backed up.
